Using EMF / WMF Files

EMF Files

Enhanced Meta Files (EMF) are graphics files used to store the same commands used to draw your drawing in Drawing View. They are vector files (not bitmaps) which means they can be scaled indefinitely without loss of resolution – making your maps crisp and readable whether you plot them to an 8.5”X11” or 24”X36” sheet of paper.

Windows Meta Files (WMF) are an older version of EMF. TPC can also export WMF files.

Exporting EMF Files

TPC can export any drawing in EMF format. The entire drawing, including the border, is written to the EMF file. The exported EMF file is like a snapshot of the drawing. It can be printed or plotted to any windows device at any scale, displayed in the XP viewer, attached to an e-mail or inserted into most Windows applications.

By default, TPC combines both the survey name and drawing name when creating an EMF file. TPC would create the file Job1Drawing1.emf for Drawing1 of the Job1 survey.

Importing EMF Files

You can import EMF files by inserting them into a drawing using the Insert | Picture command. Once inserted, the EMF file can be sized, rotated, flipped, mirrored or edited.

Supported Objects

EMF files support any thing that TPC can include in a drawing. You’ll see the fills, hatching, line types, True Type fonts, inserted pictures – everything.

Meta File Versions

Windows Meta Files are not new. You may be familiar with WMF files created in earlier versions of Windows and supported by many CAD and Windows applications. EMF files are the current generation of WMF files.

When TPC writes an EMF file, it does so in what is called ‘DUAL’ mode. EMF files can contain GDI commands appropriate for Windows 95/98/ME/NT and GDI+ commands appropriate for Windows 2000/XP. Because both commands are included, the EMF files can be read by a broader range of applications, while still allowing current Windows 2000 /XP applications to take advantage of all the .NET enhancements in GDI+.

Archiving a Drawing

TPC includes a ‘one-button’ archive command. From Drawing View, choose Tools | Archive Drawing. TPC writes an EMF file of the current drawing and saves it to the job folder for the survey. Notice in the example shown here that the archived file name includes the drawing name, the word ‘ARCHIVE’ and the date.
