Direct Connection to Serial Port

When you import or export data, TPC can transfer the data directly using a serial port on your PC. For some data collectors like the HP48 with TDS or an old Sokkia SDR, transferring data through the serial port is your only option. Newer data collectors allow you to transfer data via a USB port or bluetooth and a PC.

Using Windows 7 / Vista

Windows 7 / Vista treats your Windows CE data collector as an external drive. Just plug the data collector into your computer via a USB cable and Browse to the file you want o nthe data collector. TDS uses a Jobs\ folder to hold the survey data. You may be able to read the file directly from the data collector or you may need to copy the file from the data collector to your PC before you read it.

Of all the methods of transferring data between a PC and data collector, this is the easiest.

Using Active Synch

If you are running Windows XP on your PC and want to transfer data to or from a Windows CD data collector, you will probably use Active Synch from Microsoft. Check the CD that shipped with your data collector for a copy of Active Synch you can install.

When Active Synch runs, it opens a window on the PC that shows the files on the data collector. Files can be copied and pasted or dragged-n-dropped between the PC and the device using this window.

Choosing the Direct Connection Option

If your data collector commonicates with the PC via a serial port,

Importing

When you choose Import, TPC will first try to establish a connection with the device via the serial port and parameters you have selected. If a connection is established, TPC will display the File Open dialog so you can choose the folder you want to create the file in, transfer the file to the PC and open it.

After the file has been imported, the file itself will remain on the PC in the folder where you created it. If you need to reimport the data, you can do so directly from the file without transferring it again from the device.

Exporting

When you choose Export, TPC first writes the file to the PC, then establishes a direct connection with the data collector and transfer the file. The Export dialog will indicate when the transfer is complete.

The file name displayed in the Export dialog will be used to store the file. You can change the filename or folder with the Browse button.

DOS Filenames

Some older data collectors do not allows long file names like you find in Windows XP / Vista  & 7.  You'll find an option in the settings button [...] to force TPC to write short (DOS) file names.

We also recommend that you use a folder with a short  file name like C:\Jobs or C:\Temp to import/export data from. This eliminates any issues with long path names.
