Labeling Drawing Objects

Labeling drawing objects like lines and arcs is similar to labeling traverse lines and curves. You first select the way you want objects in this drawing to be labeled then anytime you label an object, the label is created using your settings. Once an object is labeled, you are free to modify the label, changing the font, text height, color or anything else. You can also reset the modified properties back to the current Object Label settings for the drawing.

The object labels are designed to help you be consistent in your labeling. If you start out with a label text height of 0.08” and later change it to 0.10”, all the object labels get updated automatically. Of course you can also change them all back to 0.08” just my changing the object label settings.

Labeling Rules

  1. Labels are created using the Object Labels tab in the Drawing Settings dialog. If you change these settings, all object labels are updated automatically.
  2. You can control the object layers by putting them on separate layers and setting their properties to BY-LAYER.
  3. You can modify an object label just like you modify a traverse line label. This fixes the properties you edit but leaves the unedited properties tied to the Object Labels settings.
  4. You can reset the modified properties (attributes) of an object label in which case it reverts back to the Object Label settings.

Invalid Offset

If an object label is too far from its object, TPC displays a warning along with the offset distances in inches and gives you three options. By default, TPC considers any object label more than 4 inches from its object to be out of position.

  1. Yes = reset this object label’s X and Y offsets to zero. The label will draw next to the object.
  2. No = do not reset this object label’s offsets.
  3. Cancel = don’t reset the object label and don’t check anymore labels.

Dynamic Labels

Object labels change as the object changes. If you label a 100’ line then change it to 80’, the distance label for that line will change from 100’ to 80’ automatically. If you trim a line that is labeled, the label changes to reflect the new trimmed line length. In this way, object labels are very useful during the design process where you typically draw in objects then change them to fit the design.

Supported Objects

Currently, only lines, arcs, dynamic offsets, dimensions and interior angles can be labeled.

Survey Lines and Curves Are Different

Remember, you control the way survey lines and curves are labeled with the Control Point and Side Shot settings.
