Entering Traverse Data in Drawing View

This topic discusses how you can create a traverse in Drawing View and enter its data. TPC lets you select a start point then displays and activates the Traverse View so you can enter the traverse data. As you do, TPC draws the traverse, giving you a visual reference for the data you are entering.

From the Drawings Manager, open the drawing you want to add the traverse to or create a new drawing with Tools | Insert New Drawing | select an option.

  1. Choose Tools | Add Points to Traverse to display the Add Points to Traverse dialog.
  2. Enter the name of the new traverse you want to create. To add points to an existing traverse,  select it from the pull-down list.
  3. Select the Format for the new traverse. TPC uses the edit sequence of the format to prompt you for data. TPC remembers the format you select and uses it automatically the next time you run this command.
  4. For the Method, choose - Select bearings, distances, etc. from drawing or enter data directly in the Traverse View based on the Edit Sequence.
  5. Choose the Traverse Settings to draw the traverse as you enter the data. You might want to use a contrasting color with point labels. We recommend you set the Distance and Direction options to None to reduce the amount of text on the drawing. This will make it easier to select starting points for subsequent traverses.
  6. If you plan on entering more than one lot, turn on the Repeat the Command option.
  7. Choose OK.

Select the starting point for the traverse.

TPC will display the Traverse View with the point you just selected as the first point in the traverse. Begin entering your data in the Traverse View. As you enter data, TPC computes the position of the point you are entering, draws the point, connects it to the previous traverse point and advances to the next traverse point.

When you are finished entering data in the Traverse View, left click back on the Drawing View and press Enter to end the command.

Ideal Uses

This method is ideal for checking paper plats. Once you create the first lot, you can add additional adjacent lots, sharing common points and lot lines but also entering new data and checking lot closure. Using the option to repeat the command automatically creates new traverses and increments the lot labels for you.

This method also works well for shooting two points of a foundation as sideshots and measureing (taping) around the house. You can select the two sideshots as the first two points of the traverse, thus orienting the house on the survey. Then enter the measurements around the house using deflection angles -90=left, +90=right to create the house traverse.
