Entering Remote Observations

TPC uses remote observations to compute points, which cannot be measured directly with a prism. These include such things as the center of a tree, the corner of a roof that can't be reached from the ground, and any number of situations where the line of sight to the target is obstructed.

A remote observation consists of a shot to the prism and one additional measurement to the object. The additional measurement can be any one of the following:

Only one of the measurements listed above can be used at a time for a remote observation.

The center of a tree, for instance, includes a regular shot to the prism along side the tree and half way back and an additional horizontal angle to the approximate center of the tree.

The corner of a roof, for instance, includes a regular shot to the prism under the corner and an additional vertical angle to the corner.

Formatting the Traverse View for remote observations

To manually enter a remote observation, you must first format the Traverse View to include the appropriate observations. Each of the five remote measurements listed above is available. Include each type of remote observation you will be using in the traverse.

Remote Offsets

The direction of the offset is determined by the sign of the observation as follows.

Vertical - up=positive, down=negative.
Horizontal - away=positive, back=negative.
Perpendicular – right = positive, left = negative, as seen from the OP.
