Paper Space vs. Survey Space

One of the exciting features of Drawing View is the concept of Paper Space vs. Survey Space.

Paper Space

Paper Space refers to drawing objects like the title block and north arrow that you place on the drawing page irrespective of the survey position and scale.

The title that you add to the drawing is a good example. You might want it to start one inch down from the top of the border and one inch over from the left of the border. If you move or scale the survey, you don't want the title to move with it. In paper space, it won't.

Paper space also helps when you have to change drawing sizes. In paper space, the title is always an inch from the top and inch from the left, no matter what page size you choose.

All paper space objects are positioned on the page in inches.

Paper Space coordinates are in inches from the border of the drawing. Positive coordinates are the inches from the left side and bottom of the border. Negative coordinates are from the right side and top of the border. For example, if you place a paper space object one inch from the top and two inches from the right, the coordinates will be X=–2.0 and Y=-1.0. These coordinates are displayed on the status bar along with the survey space coordinates.

When you change page sizes, the paper space coordinates do not change. If an item was three inches from the bottom of an 8.5” x11” page, it will be three inches from the bottom of an 11” x17” page.

As you move an object on the page you will notice that Drawing View changes its coordinates to reflect the side it is nearest. If, for example, you move an object to the right, as you pass the center of the page you will notice the X paper space coordinate change from positive to negative to indicate that the object is now closer to the right border than the left.

Survey Space

Survey Space refers to drawing objects like point labels and line annotations that are tied to the survey. As you scale and position the survey, these objects are sized and positioned with it.

A good example of a survey space object is a monument note that you want to show on the drawing. You will draw the note near the point it pertains to. If you want, you can include a leader from the descriptive text to the point itself. Both the text and the leader would be drawn in Survey Space. Now as you position the drawing on the page, the text and leader move with the survey.

When you view a traverse, you are viewing it in survey space. When you change the Control Point, Side Shot, and Lot Label settings, you are changing the survey space objects drawn by Drawing View.

Those of you who have used other CAD programs have worked almost entirely in survey space or what your CAD program may have called “World Coordinates”.

Paper Space Mode

As you add objects to a drawing, they will either be in paper space or survey space depending on the mode of the drawing. Once the object has been created, you can change it from paper space to survey space or visa versa, but Drawing View gives you a handy way to keep track of the mode while you are adding objects.

If the Paper Space Mode command is on, the drawing is in Paper Space Mode and any new objects you create will be paper space objects. If this command is not checked, the drawing is in Survey Space Mode and any new objects you create will be survey space objects.

Changing an Object's Space

Sometimes you may find yourself adding text or lines in paper space mode when you thought you were in survey space mode or visa versa. Once you discover the error, you need some way to convert the objects from one space to the other.

Checking Object Space

If you accidentally create an object like a narrative in survey space, then move the survey on the page, the object will move with the survey and you will probably end up moving it back to its correct position, then changing it from Survey Space to Paper Space. hich command you choose, the paper space or survey space objects will be drawn with a yellow background. If you identify an object that is not in the correct space, right click it, choose Properties and change its space. When you have checked and modified the appropriate object spaces, choose View | Delineate | Paper Space Objects or View | Delineate | Survey Space Objects to turn the yellow background off.
