Least Squares Files

Survey File

TPC stores the data for a Least Squares network adjustment in an ASCII text file with the extension .LSA for Least Squares Analysis. Each survey can have only one .LSA file with the same filename as the survey file. For example, the survey JOB1.TRV stores its network adjustment in JOB1.LSA.

This file is created when you choose Tools | Least Squares Network Adjustment from the Traverses Manager. TPC records any raw coordinates and data you include in the analysis. When you solve the network, TPC stores the adjusted coordinates in this file along with the statistics from the analysis.

TPC saves and loads this file as needed. If you choose to access some part of the network analysis, TPC looks for this file and opens it. If you make changes to the network analysis, TPC updates this file automatically.

You do not typically edit the LSA file created by TPC. All the data in the file can be edited inside TPC itself. If however, you need to create an LSA file from a third-party source, contact TPC technical support for a complete specification.

If you do a Least Squares traverse adjustment, it will be stored in a file with the survey filename - traverse name and the LSA extension. If the survey file name is ‘Job1.TRV’ and the traverse name is ‘Control A’, the Least Squares analysis file will be ‘Job1-Control A.LSA’.

Saving a Backup Copy

You can save an analysis under a different filename in the Miscellaneous dialog. The file you save is not used by the survey. It just becomes a backup file that holds the current adjusted and unadjusted values of the Least Squares network.

Only a network analysis can be saved in this manner.

Starnet File

You can write a Starnet V4.0 compatible file from the Least Squares Report dialog. This file can not be read back into TPC. It is provided only as a means for you to export the current network data to Starnet.
