Transferring Files

In this chapter you’ll learn about transferring a file from one computer to another, usually a handheld computer, via a serial cable. If you are transferring files via USB cable, you will use Microsoft's ActiveSync (or another program) to transfer your files. If you are transferring a file to TPC Handheld on an HP palmtop or Husky, choose the TPC Handheld Mgr command.

Sending a File

The dialog will indicate when the transfer is complete.

Receiving a File

The dialog will indicate when the transfer is complete.

Specifying a New Path

When you receive a file, you will see the Save As dialog. The dialog sets itself to the path of the current survey. If you do not have a survey loaded, it reverts to the default data path. To specify a new path, just navigate to the directory where you want the received file to be stored.

Both the Ymodem and Kermit protocols will supply the filename without a path. The Text protocol leaves the filename field blank, so you will need to enter a name or select an existing file to overwrite.

Existing File Options

If the file you are receiving already exists, the Save As dialog will ask if you want to replace it. Choose yes, or enter a different filename.

Interrupting a Transfer

You can interrupt the transfer at any time by clicking Cancel in the File Transfer dialog. Each of the transfers also uses a time-out, so that if you initiate a transfer and the other device doesn’t respond, the transfer routine will time out and return to the dialog box.
